Pep rally for teachers held in advance of school year

With the enthusiasm of a major sporting event, thousands of teachers and other Memphis City School staffers rallied together Wednesday at FedExForum, around hopes of a successful school year.

"We want you to know that your mission is our mission," Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton said, while addressing the crowd.

Herenton and Shelby County Mayor AC Wharton joined in the fun too, as the FedEx Forum was turned into a giant rally aimed at encouraging teachers and other staffers to do work together for success.

Superintendent Dr. Carol Johnson outlined her plan this year to focus on encouraging every child in the district to pursue college...

"Every Child, Every Day, College Bound is more than a slogan," Johnson said. "It's the way we work to educate out students."

Senior Brittany Douglas was among the city school students who worked behind the scenes at the rally.  She says the energy generated here was contagious.

"It reaffirms that they are excited about teaching and it makes me want to learn," Douglas said.

It's a feeling school officials hope makes this upcoming school year the best ever.
