For 6-years Tony Barbee sat on John Calipari's bench as one of the University of Memphis' top basketball assistant coaches...
Now, he has his own program to run.
Barbee met the Media in El Paso, Texas today as UTEP's Head Basketball Coach.
The 35-year old Barbee is known as a premier recruiter.
He takes over a program that makes regular post-season appearances, and won it all in 19-66.
Barbee says he's used to excellence, from his time as a player and assistant at UMASS under John Calipari, to his time at Memphis as the lead recruiter.
He's seen numerous N-I-T's and NCAA tournaments, including last years' Elite 8 run with the Tigers, and doesn't see any reason why the same can't happen at UTEP.
Barbee credited his former Memphis Boss and Head Coach at UMASS John Calipari with mentoring him for this job.
He'll now face the Tigers on the court in Conference USA.
