Arrest made in brutal attack

Authorities have filed charges in a June brick attack on two Memphis family members.

Tuesday, investigators charged James Edward Todd with attacking Paula Fowler and her three-year-old son Charles Jr.   The brutal attack left Fowler and her son in critical condition.

An initial investigation had indicated Fowler's estranged husband, West Memphis Police Officer Charles Fowler, was involved in the incident.  Before he could be questioned, Charles Fowler was found dead in a Crittenden County field, the victim of an apparent suicide.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Todd confessed to authorities that he hit both victims with a brick.  Todd is charged with aggravated assault and attempted first degree murder.

The Memphis Police Felony Assault unit, working with the West Memphis Police Department, picked up Todd after investigating a Crimestoppers tip.  He was taken into custody Tuesday.

Investigators have not yet released a motive for the assault, or said what connection, if any, Todd had to the estranged couple.
