Martin Hankins is the Season opening starter for the University of Memphis at Quarterback.
Tigers Head Coach Tommy West makes that decision final today...
Hankins gets the nod over Patrick Byrne and Will Hudgens, both of whom suffered broken legs early last season.
Hankins transferred to Memphis last year after a stellar freshman season at Division One-AA- Southeast Louisiana.
He passed for an NCAA Rookie Record of more than 7,700 yards.
Hankins came to Memphis after his coach Hal Mumme told him the Tigers passing attack mirrored the one he ran in Louisiana.
<'It's a really neat offense. Randy Fincner is really smart. He does a great job getting me involved where I can play my game but I don't have to be a big playmaker.'> Hankins said.
Head Coach Tommy West says:
<'I called Hal and told him we had a kid thinking of transferring and I asked if he was any good. He said he was at least as good as Danny Wimprine. So I said tell him to drive on up, or we'll pick him up!'>
Danny Wimprine, you'll recall is the all time leading passer in Tigers history.
West hopes Hankins can approach his Division 1-AA- numbers as the Number-1 man under Center for Memphis.
