NWA willing to talk, but flight attendants call it pointless

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Northwest Airlines and its flight attendants are offering sharply differing views on whether they can solve their problems at the negotiating table.

Last week a federal judge blocked random, unannounced job actions planned by flight attendants, who are trying to force Northwest to negotiate a better deal.

Wednesday, the Association of Flight Attendants told the judge it appears there's little chance that talks would help.

However, Northwest said it's willing to talk and that it's working on its own new proposals. Northwest also told the judge it would be pleased to consider any new proposals from the flight attendants.

The judge has not said when he'll decide whether flight attendants can strike. Northwest says the threatened random disruptions could kill it. Northwest has a hub at Memphis International Airport.
