MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Beale Street is getting its first hotel, as well as an old-time juke joint featuring fried grits and down-home blues.
It's all part of Lee's Landing, a $52 million development under construction just a few yards from the front door of the FedExForum, the home of the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies.
The hotel, which will be part of the upscale Westin chain, is fitting out its top floor for visiting NB-A players by raising the ceilings, doors and shower fixtures.
The juke joint is being developed by owners of the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Construction on the Beale Street project is well underway and it's scheduled to open by next spring.
It's named for Lieutenant George, a veteran of World War One who was regarded as the political boss of Beale Street in the early 1900s.
