Mother and son accused in police officer murder case

They are a mother and son accused in the murder of a police officer....a mother and son with criminal pasts.

For the last 5 years, Monique Johnson worked as a jailer at 201 Poplar but was in trouble with the law herself at one time.

Court documents show that a restraining order was filed against her in March 2005 when she was living at an East Memphis apartment.

Johnson's county personnel file shows she was once suspended for 10 days without pay for not showing up to work.

Her son 16 year old Donald Wallace was arrested last October and charged with eight counts of aggravated robbery....

He is still awaiting trial in that case...

Memphis Police have not released many details about what led to Officer Tony Hayes' murder, only describing it as "domestic"

The arrest warrant for Johnson states that she was a girlfriend of Hayes and that she shot him several times before stuffing his body in the back of his car.

Late Friday afternoon Johnson's cousin told Action News Five her entire family was in shock over the allegations that have those who know the pair questioning the mother and son they thought they knew.
