Memphis police investigate burned body found in cemetery

A burning truck sat among the headstones at New Park Cemetery early Tuesday morning.

A man's badly burned body was found inside.

Sgt. Vince Higgins with Memphis Police says, "We have determined this victim is possibly not from Memphis--trying to determine circumstances as to how he ended up in the cemetery and how he ended up dead."

Police do know that firefighters were alerted to a burning vehicle inside the cemetery around 8:45 in the morning.

Although most evidence went up in flames, they were able to determine the truck had out of state tags.

As for the body--it was in such bad condition--the medical examiner will have to confirm his identity and how he died.

Higgins continues, "We just simply don't know--that's what we're working on now."

Cemetery employees were stunned by news of the gruesome discovery, but were NOT willing to say much.

Employees tell Action News Five they have no reaction.

They did tell us gates at the graveyard do NOT close at night.

People can come and go any time of day.

THAT could be an important piece of this mystery.

Higgins continues, "We're looking into it as a homicide--we're just not certain of the circumstances."

And right now, they are NOT ruling out other possibilities such as suicide.
