Lawsuits claim two Memphis priests abused children

The two lawsuits claim two priests molested two different victims several years ago...one  a 16 a year old altar boy in the 1980's.

The lawsuit says he was abused by Father Dan Dupree, who worked at several different Catholic churches and schools in the Memphis area.

The plaintiffs' attorney Jeff Herman says, "In this case, this boy was abused starting in 1985 for a period of several years. Horrible things happened to him."

Herman said on the courthouse steps that the other victim was an 11 year old girl who he says molested  in mid 1990's by Father Joseph Nguyen.

Father Nguyen worked at St. Peter Villa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was a chaplain for the patients.

Father John Geaney with the Diocese of Memphis says, "We believe the diocese of Memphis was told about the priest back in the 1990's and this priest by our understanding is still with the diocese of Memphis today."

The Diocese of Memphis learned of the lawsuits soon after they were filed downtown and took immediate action.

Geaney continues, "Because of the allegations made today, Nguyen will not continue to minister as a priest here in the diocese."

Father John Geaney says the diocese will investigate the case to determine if the allegations are true.  As for Father Dupree...Ganey says in the late 1990's he too was not allowed to act as a priest after allegations he  abused children.

And he was just recently dismissed from the priesthood.
