Tigers Fire Joe Lee Dunn

When Joe Lee Dunn coached in his first stint at Memphis in the late 19-80's the Tigers Defense was consistently ranked among the best in the Nation..

Today the Tigers are NOT..

And Dunn is out of a job.

Head Coach Tommy West Fired Joe Lee Dunn Monday...saying he'd lost confidence Dunn's system could get the job done.

Even though Memphis finished last season with the Best Rushing Defense in Conference USA.... This years' defense has had trouble stopping the run.

West says Dunn's firing was NOT the result of Saturday's 35-20 loss at East Carolina..

Dunn was roundly criticized for his use of a 3-man front against Ole Miss..

The Rebels proceeded to pound the Tigers playing keep-a-way late in the game preserving a 3-point victory.

Memphis also couldn't stop ECU's rushing attack when it needed...and West says a decision had to be made.

West says he'll take over the Defense for the rest of the season.

Tommy West was originally hired by Memphis as Defensive Coordinator in 2000.

The Tigers have 2-weeks to get used to Wests' defensive scheme.

Memphis hosts Tennessee September 30th at the Liberty Bowl.
