Police identify woman killed in nursing home shooting

CORINTH, Miss. (AP) - Police have identified a nursing home employee fatally shot at the Mississippi Care Center in Corinth as Irene Simmons.

Corinth Police Chief David Lancaster said Simmons was shot and killed by her estranged husband, 39-year-old Andre Simmons of Walnut.

According to Lancaster, witnesses told police that Irene's husband Andre Simmons had come to the Mississippi Care Center and started a verbal argument. He then pulled a semi automatic handgun and shot Irene several times.

Lancaster said a Prentiss County constable was already looking for Andre Simmons prior to the shooting and had visited his father's home in an attempt to serve a Tippah County arrest warrant. Lancaster said the warrant stemmed from allegations of molestation, but it was not clear who the alleged victim was or what circumstances led to the charges.

The chief said Andre Simmons was not at home when authorities tried to serve the warrant. However, Simmons' father alerted him that police were looking for him and the suspect then drove to the nursing home and attacked his wife. He was later arrested about 20 miles away at his father's house in Booneville.
