FBI report: Memphis area's violent crime second-highest in nation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis metropolitan area ranked second in the nation for violent crime last year.

According to the FBI's annual crime report, Memphis and its surrounding counties had 1,197 violent crimes per 100,000 residents last year, up slightly from 1,132 in 2004.

The Nashville metro area had 894 violent crimes per 100-thousand people; Knoxville metro area had 483; and the Chattanooga metro area had 589.

In Memphis, District Attorney General Bill Gibbons attributed some of the city's increase to gang activity and drug trafficking.

Gibbons said gangs are targeting Hispanic residents in robberies, and homicides increased because of warfare between gangs.
