Memphis apartment owner killed in shooting

A Mid-South apartment owner was shot to death Friday morning at his complex on Southern Avenue.  Officials said the 72-year-old man was shot several times in the face.

Lt. Toney Armstrong of the Memphis Police Department said investigators were looking for a young suspect.  "Right now, with the description we're getting and the clothing, it leads us to believe he's a school-age teenager," Armstrong said.

Witnesses said the suspect ran off after the shooting.  John Chapman, who worked for the victim, described him as a person who was kind to everyone, and would even cash checks for people.  Chapman believed robbery was the motive for the shooting.

"He's the salt of the earth, and for somebody to do this is just unthinkable," Chapman said.

Lyric Smith, a friend of the apartment owner, agreed.  "He was just good all around. He always had a smile on his face.  It's sad this had to happen to him," he said.

Chapman was sure police would catch the shooter.  "If you're listening, we're going to get you," he said. "There ain't no place you can hide."

Armstrong said investigators have not yet established a clear motive for the murder.  Police have not yet released the identity of the victim.
