Memphis-based Fred's stores will soon use the Mid-South as a test ground for cheap generic prescriptions drugs, offering certain generic medications for $4.00 per prescription.
Wal-Mart and Target announced they will test a similar program first in Florida, while Fred's is the only local chain offering the deal.
"I think it's time big retailers, especially like Target and Wal-Mart, take a little responsibility for the community and help out," said customer Nancy Maddox.
There are questions of how retailers will make up the money they'll lose on the prescriptions.
Local pharmacists questioned whether popular drugs would be included in the program, or if it would only cover less common medications.
Each chain will limit the deal to about three hundred prescriptions. Still, customers agreed that when you're trying to save money, it's better than nothing.
