Time is short to register for November election

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee residents who aren't registered to vote have only a short time to sign up to cast ballots in the November seventh general election.

Election coordinator Brook Thompson says the deadline is Sunday, but no county election offices will be open that day and few will have any Saturday hours.

People can register at the election commission office in the county where they live today or tomorrow. If they can't get to that office, Thompson says the registration form can be downloaded from the Secretary of State Web site, but be sure it gets a postmark of no later than Saturday. The site also has the addresses of the local election commissions in all 95 counties.

The ballot has contests for governor, a U-S Senate seat, U-S House seats and state legislative races. It also has a referendum on whether to approve a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

The Web site for the form is http://www.tennessee.gov/sos. At the top of the page, click on "vote." At the top of the new page, click on the word "registration" at the top left.
