New flu vaccine approved, added to growing U-S stockpile

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government has cleared the way for new batches of flu vaccine to boost a record number of doses available this season.

A fifth vaccine has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, which says it relied in part on safety data from Canada, where FluLaval has been available since 2001.

The government estimates a total of about 115 (m) million doses of flu vaccine will be available this fall and winter.

FluLaval is for use in adults only.

The version approved by the FD-A contains the preservative thimerosal and hasn't been tested in children or pregnant women.
