Action News 5 breaks ground on new radar

Action News 5 broke new ground Monday in the commitment to viewer safety during severe weather.  At a ceremony at the West Memphis Airport, WMC-TV unveiled plans to build the most powerful and most accurate broadcast radar in the Mid-South.

"It is the best broadcast Doppler ever built," Pinpoint 5 Weather Expert Dave Brown said.  "Our mission is to keep your family safe during severe weather and this is the tool to do it."

The new radar will provide 1,000,000 watts of peak power to penetrate deeper into storms and better detect dangerous weather conditions earlier.  With higher speed and higher accuracy, it will scan four times faster than our current radar, with higher resolution.  Higher resolution means clearer pictures of severe weather as it happens.

The Pinpoint 5 Weather Team's new radar will provide updated data every ten seconds, and is accurate up to 300 meters at 300 miles, giving families more time to get to safety.

Most severe weather approaches the Mid-South from the west, and the new radar will scan the sky from the West Memphis Airport, giving viewers the earliest possible warning.

WMC TV-5 is owned by Raycom Media Inc, Raycom, and an employee-owned company, is one of the nation's largest broadcasters and currently owns and operates 36 television stations in 18 states.
