COPY-Bredesen asks for more agricultural disaster declarations

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Governor Bredesen has requested declarations of federal agricultural disaster for four more Tennessee counties---Claiborne, Coffee, Grundy and Union.

The U-S Department of Agriculture has approved declarations for 32 other Tennessee counties that have suffered drought related damages. The declaration would make farmers whose crops or livestock have been damaged by hot and dry conditions this summer eligible for low-interest emergency loans.Farmers in the counties have reported an average loss of between 40 percent and 60 percent for major crops like corn, cotton, soybeans, wheat, hay, produce and tobacco. Many livestock farmers were forced to supplement pastures with stored feed and hay and find alternate watering sources.
