MY TURN: Media must be tougher on officials

It's been a year and a half since the first Tennessee Waltz arrests and the seemingly endless stream of public corruption charges that is giving our community a bad reputation.

So, here's one of my New Year's resolutions: I resolve that the Action News 5 news team is going to devote more of its resources in 2007 toward holding our elected leaders and other public officials accountable.

The cloud that now hangs over the area's governmental institutions is embarrassing.

Of course, some of those accused of corruption are still awaiting trial and deserve the presumption of innocence, but there are also people who believe that more indictments will or should be handed down. The brazenness spelled out in these allegations leads me to believe that the news media could be doing a better job of holding these people accountable.

So I resolve that in 2007, we will.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this editorial or anything else, email or call 901-726-0546.
