A shiny new football stadium at the Mid-South Fairgrounds would be great, but football stadiums don't grow on trees.

If the City of Memphis pursues this venture, it should only be because the citizens of Memphis believe this is the best way to build a bright future for our city.

Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton is presenting this as the centerpiece of an opportunity for economic development in the area around the stadium.  Well, that's nice, but what about the area around FedExForum.  Are we declaring victory there and moving on?

Listen, what we're talking about here is a football stadium that's primarily used by the University of Memphis. If University officials really think the school needs a new stadium they should take the lead on pursuing this project. The City of Memphis still has other more pressing issues that demand more immediate attention.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this editorial or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
