I really had planned to talk about something else this week, and then I heard Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton's comments describing the current investigation of the city utility as a political and media witch hunt.
The mayor was especially critical of The Commercial Appeal, saying the newspaper was part of "an array of evil." Well, this is laughable.
This is not a media witch hunt. What this is is an FBI investigation involving the city utility, MLGW, and a city councilman, Edmund Ford.
Unlike some federal investigations, this particular aspect of this one is pretty easy for people to understand, and they are upset about it.
I'm surprised the mayor seems to be more interested in attacking the messenger than in restoring the public's confidence in city government. For the record, I think the Commercial Appeal has done an exemplary job reporting this story.
