UPDATED: Suspect dies during arrest in Millington

An altercation between Millington Police and a suspect turned deadly Wednesday afternoon.

The fight was finished by the time cameras were rolling, but those on the scene said it got ugly when Millington police attempted to arrest a suspect.

"I was told he attacked one of the officers," said Millington Police Chief Rick Jewell. "He was sprayed and they subdued him.

Many of those who views the incident said even after the suspect was subdued, officers continued kicking, hitting, and beating him.  "They were continuing to beat him, and beat him, and beat, and they had him down on his stomach, knee on his neck, and knee on his back," said one witness, who did not want to be identified.

A number of witnesses said they saw the same thing, from outside a pizza place next door. At one point, one witness claimed they screamed at officers to try and get them to stop. "It seemed like every time the guy's leg would twitch, they would beat him again and they continued to beat this guy for a long time," the witness said.  He and others were afraid be identified out of fear of retaliation, but planned to file formal complaints.

Others weren't afraid to step forward, and claimed the officers were simply defending themselves.  "I am telling you that this one man took the first two officers out in the first three seconds," said witness Greg Kilivas."

Jewell said other witnesses claimed it appeared police were defending themselves. The four officers involved were suspended, with pay, pending the outcome of an investigation.

Millington Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect who died.
