MY TURN: Anniversary of deadly tornadoes should bring reflection and caution

Monday marks the anniversary of a deadly swarm of tornadoes that devastated parts Northwest Tennessee last April.

This storm system damaged communities in eight states and killed more than 25 people.

Helping protect people from dangerous weather is a big part of our mission here at WMC-TV5.

That's why we invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in a new radar system and that's why our weather team this spring has been out at local grocery stores helping people program their emergency weather radios.

On this anniversary, our thoughts are with the families who suffered in these storms a year ago. Our goal as we observe this date is to encourage everyone to have respect for the damage these storms can cause. There is nothing any of us can do to prevent a tornado, but there's a lot we can do to prepare for one.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this editorial or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
