Middle school teacher charged with statutory rape

Gallatin, Tenn. (AP) - A Gallatin middle school teacher is accused of having sex with a high school student.

James Gregory Davis, 28, was arrested Monday after a 17-year-old girl told authorities she had sex with him last summer, according to court records. The first-year Shafer Middle School teacher faces two statutory rape charges.

A detective with the Sumner County Sheriff's Department began investigating Davis after receiving a tip. Records show that during a recorded phone conversation Davis asked the girl to tell authorities the two had never had sex, saying, "It's not something they need to know."

The girl told police she worked with Davis over the summer, when she was 16, and the two became best friends. They had sex after going on a date, she said.

The teacher, who claims to be 24 in a profile on the social networking Web site MySpace, posted bail and was released on the condition that he have no contact with minors.

Steve Doremus, a spokesman for Sumner schools, said school administrators will probably make an announcement regarding Davis' employment on Monday.
