MY TURN: Another embarrassing week for Memphis City Council

WMC-TV General Manager Lee Meredith WMC-TV General Manager Lee Meredith

It's been another embarrassing week for the Memphis City Council.

The council had a contentious meeting Tuesday to discuss resolution of the MLGW controversy. During the meeting, Councilman Edmund Ford accused one of his colleagues of being a racist.

He said the charges against MLGW President Joseph Lee were racially motivated and he said that one of his council colleagues might have to  "get a white sheet," an apparent reference to the Ku Klux Klan.

The ridiculous part of this is that Edmund Ford was able to participate in this discussion at all. Surely, his conflict of interest on this matter should have precluded his involvement in this debate.

If he had paid his utility bills on time, there would not have even been an issue to debate. In order for our society to move forward, we all need to be playing our race cards a lot less often. In order for our city government to move forward, we need to find more people with integrity, talent and the desire to actually do the jobs we elect them to do.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
