Commercial Appeal writer Wendi C. Thomas raised an interesting issue in her column this week.
She noted that radio shock jock Don Imus lost his job for making comments that were degrading to women, but yet the Beale Street Music Festival will feature Three 6 Mafia, a group that some might say makes Don Imus sound like a Sunday school teacher.
The Commercial Appeal columnist is calling on people to boycott the Three 6 Mafia appearance, and she's not alone.
Festival organizers counter with the argument that Three 6 Mafia is a hometown success and that they will be encouraged to perform a clean show.
We're with Wendi Thomas on this issue, at least to a point.
The Imus episode gives all of us a great opportunity to evaluate the standards that we find acceptable. If we think the shock jocks and the rappers and the movie makers have gone too far, this is a great time for us to reconcile our own standards and take a stand.
