In a strongly worded letter, Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton is clearing the air on whether he will run for re-election.
He sent the letter to Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton late today and copied it to members of the City Council.
Members of the Memphis business community had been pushing Wharton to run for the city job. Wharton has said he wouldn't run as long as Herenton was in the race.
In the letter, Herenton writes, "there are no circumstances, job offers, financial incentives or political/media events that could cause me not to be a candidate for reelection."
He says the voting citizens of Memphis will decide if he should continue serving as Mayor and that "I trust that your support will be evident."
