Economic developers excited about Toyota opportunities

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - The Tippah County Development Foundation says it's getting a strong response from suppliers interested in locating near Toyota Mississippi.

The Foundation's Duane Bullard says he's been in contact with suppliers after sending out several proposals regarding industrial sites.

Suppliers that provide seats or windshields and other products will want to be near the plant. Some will locate near Wellspring. But others, according to economic developers, may look farther away.

Suppliers have expressed interested in the North Ripley Industrial Park, which is located about a half-mile from Mississippi 15 and the proposed four-lane bypass to be built in several years.

The other is Walnut Industrial Park, which is located on Highway 72. Alcorn County has at least four sites that meet suppliers' preferred area requirements of 25- to-50 acres. At least one is near the Corinth/Alcorn Airport.

Toyota announced earlier this year that it's building a plant in the Blue Springs area of Union County. The plant is expected to open in 2009 and will produce Toyota's Highlander sport utility vehicle.
