Initial count shows 12 highway deaths

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - At least a dozen people died in Tennessee traffic crashes over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Safety Department spokesman Mike Browning says the fatality total could increase if local police departments have traffic deaths not yet reported to the state.

Still, Browning says it appears fewer people died on the highways over this year's Memorial Day weekend than in the same time span last year. Sixteen deaths were reported in 2006.

Besides the highway deaths over the weekend, two Tennessee men died in all-terrain vehicle accidents in Kentucky and an Indiana man was killed in an A-T-V crash in Campbell County in East Tennessee.
