Autopsy ordered in death of woman in DeSoto jail

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County officials are awaiting autopsy results on an inmate who died in the jail Monday.

DeSoto County Sheriff's Department spokesman, Chief Deputy Steve Atkinson, says Nakema Fox was in a single observation cell at the DeSoto County jail.

He says Fox had been walking around in the cell and the jailer noticed that she walked over to her bunk and laid down.

He says when she was checked about five minutes later, there was no response.

Fox was taken by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven, where she was pronounced dead.

Atkinson says Fox had been picked up May 18th on a family commitment order and was awaiting transfer to a state mental hospital.
