Take a look at the name...and get used to the pronunciation.
That's the last name of the Memphis Grizzlies New Head Coach..
But, he was first on the list of replacements for the Fired Mike Fratello. Iavaroni met the media Downtown at FedExForum this afternoon.
He comes with a gym bag full of recommendations from the top coaches in the league..and he's worked for several of them, including Pat Riley of the Miami Heat, and most recently Mike D'Antoni of the Phoenix Suns.
As the Top Suns Assistant, Iavaroni was heavily sought after as the Number One Up and Comer...
But, it's the Grizzlies who get him.
Iavaroni says Memphis' persistence paid off.
He says the Grizzlies got on him early before all the other teams looking for new head coaches..and never let up.
Iavaroni says the Grizz have a lot of top young talent he's excited to try and mold into a cohesive, fast breaking unit.. Plus, Pau Gasol is an All-Star in every sense, who will anchor this team on its' way back to the playoffs.
Team Owner Michael Heisley says he did his job in getting Jerry West to Memphis, and he's doing it again bringing Iavaroni here... But, now the team must work even harder to get the fans back excited with the Grizzlies.
Heisley also said Iavaroni will have input in choosing a new General Manager.
That would seem to give the nod to current Suns Vice President of Business Operations David Griffin.
NBA Beat Writer Peter Vescey says Griffin is all but delivered to the Grizzlies.
Heisley says he'll name the Grizzlies new General Manager in mid-June after he returns from a European Golf outing with Outgoing Team President Jerry West.
West will also have a say on the new General Manager.
