Inmate release delayed because of courthouse break-in

The release of more than a dozen inmates from the Fayette County Jail was put on hold Monday after a weekend break-in at the Fayette County Courthouse.

During the break-in of Fayette County Circuit and County Court offices, several items were taken, including the docket for Judge Mike Whitaker's Monday cases.

Whitaker, a Fayette County General Sessions judge, said last week that he would release more than one dozen inmates being held on misdemeanor charges because the county jail was a "fire trap."

Officials said there were no signs of forced entry on the outside of the courthouse.  The TBI is helping the Somerville Police Department with their investigation of the break-in.
