RiverKings Change Name to "Mississippi" from "Memphis"

After 15 years as the Memphis Riverkings, the Mid-Souths' hockey team is getting a make-over.

At least in name.

They are now the MISSISSIPPI Riverkings.

After moving from the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis to Southavens' DeSoto Civic Center in 2000, they kept the name the same.

But after years with a Mississippi address the team sensed the fans felt it's time for a change.

The 'Kings held an online poll suggesting 5 different names...keeping Memphis, or going with Mississippi, Southaven, DeSoto, or Mid-South..

In the end, the 1,700 people who voted went for Mississippi over Memphis in a close talley.

RiverKings Director of Business Operations Brian Mattice says:

"I hope it will bring us more fans. It could alienate a few Memphis fans for a bit, but we're still putting the same product on the floor."

Adds 'Kings Head Coach Kevin McClelland...the team will come back even stronger from last years' club which went to the Central Hockey League Semifinals..

"We came close last year but not close enough. So there's gonna be changes. I already traded Travis Banga who was a good scorer for this hockey team."

McClelland says he has 17 of his 24 players signed already for next season.

The MISSISSIPPI Riverkings open camp October 9th.
