The push is on to draft Shelby County Mayor AC Wharton into the race for Memphis mayor.
Wharton said he is not doing interviews until he makes a decision on whether or not he will run for Memphis mayor.
This morning, Mayor Wharton and Mayor Willie Herenton were both at a groundbreaking event for Nike. Wharton was instrumental in helping Herenton first get elected in 1991, acting as his campaign manager.
As Wharton ponders his decision to run or not to run for city mayor, many of his supporters are coming out in full force. They are publicly encouraging him to get in the race. Several community leaders have set up the "Draft AC" program.
Former county mayor Bill Morris believes that Wharton is the right man for the job, even if that means going against an old friend.
"I think there is only one thing going through his mind," Morris said, "is AC Wharton doing the right thing running for city mayor? Not running against Willie Herenton."
Morris said that Wharton's supporters will have no problem raising money for his campaign. They have already raised close to $10 thousand after the "Draft AC" announcement yesterday.
Morris said he is confident the program could raise half a million dollars in one event for AC Wharton.
