Grocery store manager chases down robber

The manager of a Sav-A-Lot grocery store in Covington gave chase to a robber who stole her purse.

Beth Esra was robbed in the parking lot of the Sav-A-Lot she manages in the middle of the day.  she then proceeded to chase down her robber.

Esra said her decision was almost involuntary.

"Just a reaction," said Esra.

Esra got in her car, caught up with the robber.  She followed at a safe distance, feeding information to 911 dispatchers the whole time.

After driving nearly 20 miles, police pulled over the getaway car, arresting 61-year-old James Alfred Goodman.

Goodman has been charged with aggravated robbery.

Chief Deputy Donna Turner of the Tipton County Sheriff's Department appreciated Esra's help, but also cautioned anyone attempting this type of act.

"As a department, we don't want anyone to become harmed by trying to help us," said Turner.  "In this particular situation, I felt like it was appropriate and it ended up being the pivotal thing that solved this case."

Esra believed what happened was very lucky.

"[I] was very lucky that it turned like it did," said Esra.
