HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - Sheriff's officials say a southwest Ohio man is dead after he tried to take down a power line and strip the copper from the inside so he could sell it.
According to a Butler County sheriff's spokeswoman, Brandon Reed of Hamilton got tangled up in the power lines and was electrocuted. Authorities say his accomplice called 911.
High copper prices in recent years have thieves breaking into power plants and abandoned factories to rip out the wiring. Vandals are even stealing from gravesites.
It's estimated that about two-dozen people have been killed trying to steal copper in the US over the past year.
