Woman carjacked and sexually assaulted in downtown Memphis

Memphis police are investigating a downtown carjacking that ended in a sexual assault. Now police need your help to find the suspect who struck at the corner of Fourth Street and Gayoso.

The assault happened on Wednesday in broad daylight in downtown Memphis.

Friday morning, investigators found the woman's car, but they're still looking for the man responsible.

Police say a woman left the Double Deuce club on Beale Street and was driving on Fourth Street.

She came to a stop sign at Gayoso and that's when she told police a man jumped into her car and told her he would kill her if she didn't listen to him.

The man drove her around a few miles and when they got to the intersection of McLemore and Louisiana in South Memphis she told police that's when he sexually assaulted her.

She said the man then let her out, but stole her Toyota Camry and her purse.

"She encountered a truck driver that assisted her on that evening and she made a phone call for police," said Sgt. Vince Higgins with Memphis Police Department.

Police recovered her car Friday morning on Cannon near Gleason. That's in South Memphis.

Right now, police have a vague description of the man responsible. If caught, he could face charges of kidnapping, sexual assault and carjacking.
