SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - A modest high school literary magazine is prepared for record sales this year thanks to a contributed essay from alumnus and best-selling novelist John Grisham.
April Holifield, the sponsor for Melange, the magazine produced by students at Southaven High School, asked Grisham if he would write a letter to students the magazine could use as an introduction.
About two months later, he sent the magazine an essay about his experiences as a student at Southhaven High School.
The magazine sold 150 copies last year, printed for 4-dollars each at Kinko's.
This year's run will be 3-thousand copies, with a raised spine, thanks to a grant from the Alcoa Foundation. Copies will be available beginning August 20th and can be ordered online.
Grisham was born in Arkansas and lived across the South before graduating at Southaven, located about 15 miles south of Memphis.
The former attorney and state legislator is best known for his novels "A Time to Kill" and "The Firm."
