Ark. does not plan stepped-up bridge inspections

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department says it does NOT plan to step up bridge inspections after the collapse of a bridge in Minneapolis.

Department spokesman Randy Ort says officials do have a number of inspections scheduled around the state.

The eight-lane Interstate 35W bridge, a major Minneapolis artery, buckled during the evening rush hour last night. Dozens of cars were pitched in the Mississippi River.

Emergency crews are resuming cleanup and recovery work today.
