Runner collapses during race on Chattanooga's Missionary Ridge

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A 19-year-old Georgia college student collapsed Saturday morning during a race atop Chattanooga's Missionary Ridge and later died at the hospital.

John Bruner of Dalton collapsed near the end of the Missionary Ridge Road Race Saturday morning.

He was helped on the scene by two doctors and nurse who had also ran the race and then taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.

An automated external defibrillator was used in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Bruner was a former cross country captain at Dalton High School and was to be a sophomore on the Georgia College and State University running team this fall, according to the university.

"He was just an outstanding kid," cross country coach Joe Samprone said in a statement released by the university. "Good student, good runner, good person. There was nothing but positives to say about John."

He ran in the race last year and finished third in his age group and 23rd overall. His mother and father were also running in the 4.7-mile race.
