A couple weeks ago Redbirds outfielder Rick Ankiel told me he hoped to be called up to St.Louis in September if not sooner. Turns out Scott Spezio's personal demons and a trip to rehab made Ankiel's wish come true. And I don't think he's ever coming back.
Ankiel helped hit two home runs and went 3-4 Saturday as the Cards beat the Dodgers at Busch 6-1. Redbirds fans know all about what he can do at the plate. He turned on a low fast ball from Derek Lowe in the first inning and sent it into the bullpen in right for a 2-run home run. In the 7th, he saw another fastball from Roberto Hernandez and deposited in about the same spot. Busch was going nuts, calling Ankiel out for two curtain calls.
Rick Ankiel, the one time major league PITCHER, is back in a big way. He now has 3 home runs in his first 12 at bats for the Cards and even had an outstanding over the shoulder catch in right.
