HOUSTON (AP) - Three people have been killed near Houston after an Amtrak train slammed into a car on the tracks.
Witnesses told the sheriff's office the driver of the car drove around a guard rail last night and tried to dart across the tracks.
Police say the engineer saw the car for a split second before the crash, blaring his horn and slamming on the emergency brakes. The train crashed into the car and pushed it for about 2,000 feet before coming to a stop.
The car was on fire, and the train's crew used extinguishers to put out the flames.
The two men and one woman inside the car died at the scene. Authorities say they appeared to be younger than 20. There were no injuries on board the train.
