Middle school athletes collapse during heat wave

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities said three middle-school aged boys collapsed from the heat today during a youth football game in Spring Hill.

Fire department officials said two were taken to local hospitals for apparent heat exhaustion and a third was treated at the game.

The players, who have not been identified, were taken to the emergency room as a precaution. Temperatures were in the mid-90s during the afternoon game between the Spring Hill Raiders and the Franklin Cowboys.

The teams are a part of the Tennessee Youth Football Alliance, which is not associated with area school systems.

Many schools have shortened the school day during the heat wave and pushed back athletic practices into the cooler, evening hours.
