MEMPHIS , Tenn. (AP) - An officer of a civil rights group says critics of Memphis' first white congressman in three decades are wrong to complain about his race.
The Rev. Dwight Montgomery, head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Memphis , has come to the defense of Congressman Steve Cohen. He's in his first term and is under fire from some black activists in Memphis. Montgomery said his group supports justice and equality for everyone, regardless of race, religion or political affiliation.
Cohen is under attack for his vote on a proposed hate crime law that would protect gays, and some critics also question his ability to represent a majority black congressional district. Cohen is a former state senator with a strong civil rights record.
