Ex-cop sentenced to 18 months for shaking down motorists

MEMPHIS , Tenn. (AP) - A former Memphis police officer was sentenced Wednesday to 18 months in prison for stealing money from motorists.

Trennis Swims pleaded guilty in May to civil rights violations for surreptitiously stealing cash from two drivers while on duty as a Memphis police officer in 2006.

"Criminal acts committed by our officers sully the honor of badge and will not be tolerated," said Memphis Police Director Larry Goodwin.

"We will continue to work with state and federal agencies to end criminal activity within our ranks." Swims will be on federal supervised release for one year after he is released from prison.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI and the Memphis Police Department Security Squad. Some two dozen police officers have been charged with corruption since 2004.
