County clerk made right decision, lawyer says

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The Benton County attorney says the county clerk was following the law when she denied a 17-year-old girl a marriage license.

The mother of Lisa Marie Stansell says she gave her daughter permission to marry and the mother filed a lawsuit that challenges the clerk's decision.

The controversy stems from a new law that includes a typo that allows juveniles who are not pregnant to get married if they have their parents' permission.

The law was supposed to say juveniles who are pregnant can get married if they have their parents' permission. County attorney Robin Green says the county clerk was following the law as codified by the Arkansas Code Revision Commission.

The panel changed the wording to read as the legislators intended. The lawsuit says the commission didn't have the authority to change the wording.
