Fred Thompson gets warm welcome in hometown

LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. (AP) - Fred Thompson has made his hometown of Lawrenceburg the site for his first public appearance in Tennessee since announcing his bid for the presidency.

An excited crowd packed into the town square to cheer on Thompson, who graduated from high school here and later returned to launch his legal and political careers.

John Rich of the country band Big and Rich warmed up the crowd with songs peppered with Thompson references.

He replaced the refrain of a Johnny Cash song with the words: "Fred walks the line." Thompson was introduced by his political mentor, former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker.
