Hunter finds human remains in Shelby County

Shelby County investigators are working to identify a human skull that was discovered by a deer hunter Saturday.

The remains were found in a wooded area along Reynolds Road just South of Shelby Drive.

Sunday morning, volunteers from the Shelby County Emergency Services Division used specially trained cadaver dogs to search the area for additional bones or personal items.

They're looking for any evidence that can help forensics experts identify who the remains belong to.

"They have excellent noses they're able to pinpoint areas they're able to find evidence that we can't see that we can't smell so they're extremely helpful in these searches," says Vicki Roye.

No other items were found with the skull, however, it did still have teeth intact and fillings.

Investigators hope to make a positive identification as quickly as possible in case the remains are linked to a missing persons case.

"We'll be looking into all missing persons cases and cold cases. Anybody that may've been seen in the area--looking into that soon as possible. Throughout the community there's an empty chair at a dinner table, an empty chair at a house. For that person's family, we want to get to the bottom of this soon as possible," says Steve Shular with Shelby County Sheriff's Department.
