Investigators identify human remains

There is new information about a skull found this weekend near Collierville. We know the skull belongs to a white woman in her early 20's.

There were teeth in the skull, which show the woman's wisdom teeth were removed.  Investigators say the skull could have been there from two to ten years.

On Sunday, volunteers from the Shelby County Emergency Services Division used specially trained cadaver dogs to search the area for additional bones or personal items.

Now, investigators are hoping to identify the woman. The challenge is finding out who this woman was and what happened to her.

A deer hunter discovered the skull Saturday afternoon. One piece of clothing was found in the area, but so far it has not been linked to the woman's skull.

The skull has not been linked to any missing person cases investigated by Shelby County.

But late Monday afternoon, Sheriff's detectives issued a nation-wide bulletin to other law enforcement agencies.

It's not just police who are interested in this case, family members with missing loved ones have also contacted the department.

"Obviously it causes a tremendous amount of concern, we can only imagine what it's like for a family member just to hear the word skull found or bones found...that's why we want to work this case as quickly as possible," says Steve Shular with Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

Ther's hope that dental records will help identify the woman.
