Only on 5: Shelby County employee busted for selling taxpayer property

Action News 5 was there as Michael McCracken's regular day at work was ruined.

"It's the theft of appliances from the Shelby County Housing Authority," says Dee Bowling with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office ALERT Squad.

Maintenance Supervisor McCracken is accused of padding his pockets by selling property you paid for.

"We're talking about refrigerators, stoves, ovens, things like that," says Bowling.

Investigators believe McCracken sold up to 100 appliances in all over the last two years, charging anywhere from 100 to 200 dollars per appliance, both new and used.

The Shelby County Housing Authority stores much of its property at a facility in Frayser. It's where detectives say an undercover officer actually bought a refrigerator from McCracken.

"In this particular case, it was a brand new appliance still wrapped in the housing authority's wrapper," says Bowling.

Mr. McCracken would not crack under our questioning.

"You haven't made money off selling county property? asked Reporter Jason Miles. No, no, no, whatsoever," said McCracken.

Investigators are confident he's their man.

"I don't think there's going to be any defense for him," says Bowling.

We're told the Housing Authority will conduct a complete audit to see just how much monetary damage McCracken may have done.

All McCracken's boss would tell us was that she was both surprised and shocked. Investigators are still trying to determine where all the appliances may have ended up.
